Introduction
Havana was the most protected place by the Spanish crown in Colonial time. The cause for this overprotection was that here they stored the treasures that were extracted in the rest of colonies in America. For more than two centuries Havana, cruise of America, was under the greedy radar of corsairs and pirates that swarmed the Caribbean. It was also object of desire of the most conspicuous powers at the time, such as the British Empire.
The Fortress system of Colonial Havana is one of the better preserved military complexes of Hispanic America. Cuba has in its military history one of the oldest fortifications in the Spanish empire, the fortress of the Real Force (Castillo de la Real Fuerza), and with the most expensive of all, San Carlos de la Cabaña, making the Iberian king Carlos the 3rd, ask to see it from the windows of Escorial, in Spain.
To visit these fortress is like to travel in History, not only from Cuba but over the hole continent.
